Hypnobabies for . . . Cesarean Births?
If you've never read this pamphlet: "What Every Pregnant Woman Needs to Know About Cesarean Section" I highly recommend you take the time to do so - especially if you are a pregnant woman. It sums up Cesarean births in a very helpful, evidence-based way.
Cesarean births can be a hot topic of discussion and contention in the natural birth community - mostly because a full third of births in the U.S. are Cesareans when they should really only make up about 5-10% of births according to the World Health Organization. With the focus so much on, "How can we help reduce unnecessary Cesareans?!" women who give birth by Cesarean often feel a disconnect from the natural birth community. But, that need not be the case.
In fact, some care providers are educating themselves (as well as being told by clients!) how they can better serve families with more natural, family-centered Cesarean sections. Take a look at this wonderful video to learn more about that.
What, after all, is the main goal of the natural birth community? To empower moms to make informed choices for their babies' birth and to foster an environment that makes that easier and more comfortable to do - right?
A good friend of mine - who has had three Cesarean births - told me the other day as we were discussing all things birth, "You know, I think Hypnobabies would have been really helpful to me, even with my C-sections, and anesthesia."
She explained that though she had an epidural for her C-sections, the experience of giving birth (not just the recovery) was very painful for her. She said that she really had to rely on her Lamaze techniques to get her through - but that she thinks Hypnosis would have helped her more. (I of course, wholeheartedly agreed. ;) )
Her comments got me thinking about all the wonderful resources Hypnobabies has for mothers who have Cesarean births - and there are a lot! I thought I would list those here so they can all be seen all in one place for anyone who has ever thought that Hypnobabies and Cesareans can't go together!
Our live and home study classes include a special "Change of Plans" script that birth partners can read to Moms should a change in plans become necessary, to help them both with the adjustment. This is a good resource for moms who didn't plan on a Cesarean. Here is a birth story (here) where the momma used the change of plans script to stay calm and focused.
In the standard Hypnobabies classes (live and home study), students learn how to create Hypno-anesthesia that they can direct to any part of their body as they need it. They learn several cue words to trigger deeper hypnosis and hypno-anesthesia. This could be employed before, during, and after the birth experience, by the mom or by her birth partner or doula, whether the birth is physiological or surgical. This would certainly make a Cesarean birth and recovery more comfortable! You can read how that worked in this birth story and this one and this one.
Hypnobabies Cesarean Birth Preparation Set. These tracks can be listened to independent of the Hypnobabies classes. This set includes three mp3's that help the mother to stay calm and confident for her birth. In addition, it includes a pamphlet on creating a family centered C-section.
Needles are OK! This track helps moms who have a fear of needles overcome that fear.
Eliminate Nausea Now! This track could be helpful during pregnancy and childbirth, too!
Breastfeeding Success. This track helps moms with breastfeeding. A great resource for all moms and especially for mommas who give birth by Cesarean.
Peaceful Sleep Now, For All! This track helps with insomnia. (Hypnobabies does make one specifically for pregnant mommas.) Again - helpful for all moms. Definitely a helpful tool after recovering from surgery.
Birth Partner Relax and Feel Confident - This is a track that helps birth partners feel confident and better able to support the momma during the big day. They learn a cue word that helps them relax in the moment should they need it. A confident birth partner means that an expectant mother doesn't need to worry about her partner's state of mind come birthing time.
Hypnobabies has a variety of fantastic tools that help moms - no matter how their babies are born. Great to know, don't ya think!? :)
